All of the hardening I do involves water shaping and wax hardening. Pieces are molded and shaped by moistening them in water to make them malleable, and then after they have completely dried they are immersed in my wax mix. I use a mix of carnauba and bees wax, which results in a very strong product, but also by virtue of carnauba's high melting point, one that does not soften in sunlight.

Wax hardening has an added benefit of defeating the three dreaded "M's" of leather armor. Moisture, mold, and mildew. Another added benefit is that even though over time, the leather may start to lose some of its rigidity from repeated impact, it can be re-hardened in most cases, unless the leather itself has split, cracked, or broken down.

Bear in mind as well that even when the leather loses some of its rigidity, that for certain products this does not lessen its protection value. Most notably with lamellar armor. The leather will always retain a certain amount of stiffness, and since the scales are made from 8-9 ounce leather to begin with, and are laced together in an overlapping pattern you will always have 16 to 18 ounces of leather on an impact zone.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

For those interested in custom tooling please note the following. Most of the armor I make can be personalized with custom tooling. However, due to having arthritis, tooling can add considerable time to the completion of your order. Time estimates are just that, estimates. They depend a great deal on the condition of my health. Standard items will generally be completed on time, but custom tooled items may be delayed. I will do my best to keep you updated, including pictures of your order in progress, but please understand from the start, that custom tooled orders will get done as they get done.
